SADA INDIA

Sopena Adivasis Deployment Association

Fr Frederico Sopena was, is and will always be an Inspiration for many.  SADA was formed in his memory and to continue his legacy of selfless service, especially to the Adivasis - the tribal people of India. These people have been ignored, discriminated against and marginalised for centuries from the mainstream of Indian society. 'Deployment'means "the action of bringing resources into effective action"; SADA’s resources will be raised in India and deployed for the development of the Adivasis, supported by encouragement from ADA in Spain.

The acronym SADA sounds like saada (simple) or sadaa (forever) in Hindi and other Indian languages - a fitting tribute the memory of Fr. Sopena who led a life of exemplary simplicity and served his cause for nearly 70 years.

We are SADA India.

FR. FREDERICO SOPENA

Seven decades of tireless contribution to adivasi development

A Jesuit priest who dedicated his life to empowering the people at the grassroot level, Fr. Sopena was born in Barcelona, he left Spain as a teenager and sailed to India in 1949 to promote education, health and social emancipation projects with local organisations. India soon became his adopted homeland.

Though Spanish by birth, he was Indian at heart - and after three decades of effort, finally Indian by citizenship just a year before his demise at the ripe old age of 92.

Dressed in a simple kurta-pyjama, striding along with a Jaipur foot from a road accident many years ago, this tall, lanky priest worked tirelessly to achieve upliftment for even the most disadvantaged tribal communities.

A deep rooted faith and his commitment to the poor and the outcast powered his work. He passed on in 2017, leaving a legacy of hope, goodwill and the undying love of the people he worked with so closely for nearly seventy years.

"The Good You Can Do With One Foot in the Grave" reminds us of his tenacity and spirit.

SO HOW DID IT START ??

The unfliching love for humanity...an infectious idea germinated by Fr. Sopena lead his family and friends to the creation of ADA - an Adivasi centric NGO founded in Spain.

Raising funds through charity events in the local communities ADA has been funding grass-root organizations in their efforts towards better lives and livelihoods for the tribal and marginalized population of rural India.

SADA - the SOPENA ADIVASI DEPLOYMENT ASSOCIATION, was started as a vision of Fr .Sopena, to support local initiatives and agencies through local resources,

WHO WE ARE

Carrying forward the legacy of Fr. Sopena

Founded by a small group of Fr Sopena’s friends and admirers, SADA has a managing committee comprising five members. All the members are voluntary in their participation and committed involvement. As time moves on it is expected that there will be many more members enrolled with the Association to carry forward its purpose.

TRIBAL-CENTRIC

All projects and program identified for support and sponsorship are tribal-centric. Projects for the next few years will be restricted to Maharashtra so that access is easy and convenient to coordinate.

SHORT TERM PROJECTS

Support is provided to short-term projects that span from 3 months (single transaction) to a year (recurring). Projects such as emergency assistance, rights awareness, medical, health and hygiene camps, herbal medicine and home remedies, school supplies, kitchenware, footwear, clothing, house repairs, or bicycles are some of the work we have deployed funds towards.

LONG TERM PROGRAMS

Support is provided to long-term programs that span more than 1 year, up to a maximum of 3 years. Examples of such projects are nutrition programs, skill development, long term illness, medical and mobile clinics, off-site schools, transportation, self-help groups, self-employment programs, empowerment programs, teacher training, vocational classes or computer training.

DISBURSAL OF FUNDS

Funding through donations is disbursed only through registered organizations that have expertise and track record to carry out the proposed projects and programs. SADA conducts due diligence to screen the prospective projects and programs, and will monitor progress and use of funds.

MEMBER VISITS

SADA members are encouraged to visit various projects and programs, as an encouragement to the organizations as well as an immersion into the work SADA is associated with. Visits of members, volunteers and others are organized from Mumbai and conducted at the sites of the Projects or Programs.
